DunnExoticBananas

Nathan Dunn -- Exotic

So I considered the idea of exotic, looked up all possible definitions of the the word and searched related topics; only to come to the conclusion that I didn't like the theme... at all. But then I thought on it some more and decided to shoot for my understanding of the related theme of Belonging or relation.

My banana's over ripened presence is complemented by the visual texture of the marble counter top. So the two seem to almost belong with one another as they share a visual texture.

It was shot with 120 Kodak BW film. BW so that the texture would be the focus and not the many colors of the marble or the green walls.  If you think I should reshoot, please comment early, as I will only be able to while I am in Muskoka and will have to plan my week around it.

  1. this is really lovely, Nathan. i can't stop looking...
you found something simple but clever, and made it beautiful. the textures of the banana skins and marble are nicely lit, and provide the eye with so much detail to look at. i think the black and white is working, especially because the warm yellowish tone is highlighting the bananas well.
only thought, the black triangular shapes on the left side of the frame are a bit distracting. be curious to see what it looks liek with just the floor colour there. might not be necessary though.
    nice work!

  2. I really like this, but I can't really see the banana. I THOUGHT IT WAS A SNAKE! LOOL FAIL! Maybe if you had them on a different textured background, because from just looking at it I really thought it was some sort of snake. Maybe I'm just seeing things. :S But just a suggestion.

  3. Your colour choice is absolutely spot on for this image. Would enjoy seeing a closer cropped image, or an overhead view. If doing an overhead view I would make the image more flat so the bananas blend into the background evenly and then the background will also be in focus (F/11?). So therefore the realm between banana and background becomes undefined.

  5. I really like the composition of the photo from the set up to the tone used. I agree with Clare that the little triangle in the corner is a little distraction, but it's nothing huge. I also like the contrast between the pattern of the banana and the table. The definite lines on the table (near the bottom of the image) also add to the composition giving the eye a path to follow. Overall great photo!
