Claire Harvie, Theme #1, Fast Food

The Orange Julep
This theme got me thinking about fast food as a 'dining experience', and about the physical buildings that cater to a late-night craving, or serve as refuge from a long, cramped, family road trip. This delightfully absurd restaurant/orb is somewhat of a Montreal landmark. The Orange Julep...it's an orange! Famous for its creamy, orange (pretty gross) juice 'beverage', I enjoy how the exterior closely resembles the artificial quality/colour/texture of fast food & fast food packaging. The mostly deserted parking lot and the coloured flags add a bit of nostalgia for a time when this place was a crowded '50s hotspot, with waitresses in rollerskates cheerfully delivering a hot-dog stimé to the window of your car. As for the image, I'm still fidgeting with levels and saturation and colour balancing... input of all kinds please :)

  1. Hi Claire! I think I would actually like this picture more without the flag. I think it pulls my eye away from the Orange!

  2. It seems as though the horizon is slightly right-leaning. Was this intentional? It actually kind of adds to the implied weight of the pretty ridiculous looking orange!

  3. I agree with both comments above. I would be interested in seeing what the photo is like without the flags, but at the same time they could be helping the eye focus on the orange. I really like the composition and the message you are trying to convey, and the different approach you took.

  4. I actually like the flags! I feel like they lead the eye into the image! Same goes for the tire tracks on the bottom. I like how you took this at night, the black and orange contrast nicely in my opinion!
