Mithila Majithia - Theme #2: Exotic

Hi all,

This is a portrait I took of my friend Lucy from Wednesday's class. I wanted to keep it simple and focus on her facial features since I've always been interested in the way people's appearances can change across racial backgrounds.

  1. i like the idea behind this, but i'm not feeling the way it's so closely cropped to her face. i understand that you are trying to focus on her facial features, but i think the eyeliner kind of contradicts that, and the eyeliner on the other eye (because it's cropped) becomes nonexistent--making her look like she's only made up in one eye. i really like the colour the flower on her ear gives, but it's cut off also, and i think pulling out on that would give more colour and a nice accent. :)

  2. I agree with carrie and probably bring out the zoom a little bit more. But I like the way the you lit her. Other than that I really like it.

  3. I like where your going with this idea. I feel that your idea would be stronger if you had multiple subjects in one image: like a triad. each subject with a different ethnicity, to better show the different features across racial backgrounds. So you could theoretically take two or more photos of two other subjects with different backgrounds in exactly the same pose.

On the Makeup: I feel that unless the makeup is exaggerating the features of your subject(s) it should just be left out. To better show the natural features.

I actually like the way you cropped the image it allows your viewer to observe almost the entire face and its features but places some of the subject outside the frame to add some mystery. It keeps the viewer wondering about what is not being seen.

I love your take on the theme and would be keen on seeing you continue with it.

  4. I'm going to agree with the comment on the cropping and pull out some more. Also the shadow under the chin and on the shoulder is not appealing, you could use a bounce to eliminate it.

In terms of the makeup I think you should either commit or not. Either go with the au natural look, sans makeup or do the traditional makeup to the racial background, so a racial/cosmetic background of that person.

    Cool focused concept though.

  5. I agree with pulling the crop out. Maybe a square crop with the model on the side? The flower in her hair isn't easily recognizable.
I also really like Nathan's idea of having multiple races.

But I really like your take on this theme! :)
