Gina Staios - Icon

Hello everyone!!
So, when I thought of an icon, the first thing that popped in mind are religious icons. In my kitchen, there's an area in an above corner where our icons are placed. So I thought this would be the perfect place to use for this theme. :)

Michelle Nunes- Icon

Hey everyone,

Okay so here is my post for the theme of Icon.

Do you know who it is? It's Twiggy Lawson, model of the 60s! I'd say she is a pretty big Icon of today and the 60s/70s.

This portrait is suppose to be based on a photograph by Barry Lategan.

Alex Pennington - Exotic

So here is my photo, i had trouble with this theme, apparently, but it got me thinking about foreign and exotic architecutre, do people from away come here and go, "Oh look at this building, the architecture is so exotic don't you think love?, we must tell our friends when they come here to take in the awe inspiring architecture of toronto!"

Also that awkward moment when i come to check if anyone has commented on my photo, only to see that a week ago instead of clicking publish i clicked save. my bad.

love you all oodles.

Jane Kuhn, Theme #2 - Exotic

I accidentally added this to the Wednesday Class website, FAIL! Anyways, I saw this in my near by park and I thought it looked really cool. But I'm not sure if it is what I want for this theme. I'll probably change it later on. But I thought since it was out of the ordinary I thought it was appropriate.

Mithila Majithia - Theme #2: Exotic

Hi all,

This is a portrait I took of my friend Lucy from Wednesday's class. I wanted to keep it simple and focus on her facial features since I've always been interested in the way people's appearances can change across racial backgrounds.

Jacob Burt - Theme #2 Exotic

Hello all,
I know initially my submission may seem odd, But I suppose that is what this statement is for.
When I first discovered our theme for our second submission was exotic, I thought really hard at what I thought exotic meant to someone raised in a extraordinarily diverse city. I had trouble initially creating an idea. In turn I decided to take a slightly more abstract approach to the theme this time and instead of shooting obvious, I took a look at the subtle exotic objects we wear everyday. The idea was to capture the essence of the exotic locations within their products and industry. A little different then the norm I suppose but I thought it seemed relevant to the theme of what exotic really is.

-Jacob

P.s. I submitted 2 works because they have slightly different cropping and would really love to see which is preferred. Cannot wait to see what everyone has to say!

Gina #2 Exotic

Since the word exotic can mean anything out of the ordinary, I decided to do a still life type of picture with items that are related to Greece (where my parents are from). I used a jewellery box with a Greek type painting, old pictures of my mom from Greece, a Greek necklace sports type thing (why am I forgetting the name?) and an evil eye bracelet. :)

EDIT: Ah, maybe I should have mentioned that the blue gradient was intentional, haha.

Carrie Cai, Theme #2, Exotic

i found out the other day pineapples don't grow from trees...... and in my mind, those trees looked like palm trees, which was the only thing i could think of when i thought of "exotic." and because palm trees are quite costly to get a hold of, here is a pineapple, with a lei. done in a drab, studio-esque style, to contrast with any potential fun in the sun these two objects are known to be a part of. critique away!

I'm not too sure how I feel about this. This theme bewilders me.

Helen Piekoszewski - Theme #2. Exotic.

Hey kids. :)
I decided to look at this theme from the angle of what is exotic to me right now. Coming from Europe, having had the opportunity to travel a lot, and having gone to an international school, I've seen a lot of what would be considered exotic to people here. For me, living in this type of a city and experiencing a North American way of life is what I find new, different, strange, exciting, and well... exotic. :)

I did two different versions, one black and white and one just very de-saturated. I'm leaning towards the black and white one as my final image.

Let me know what you think!

Nathan Dunn -- Exotic

So I considered the idea of exotic, looked up all possible definitions of the the word and searched related topics; only to come to the conclusion that I didn't like the theme... at all. But then I thought on it some more and decided to shoot for my understanding of the related theme of Belonging or relation.

My banana's over ripened presence is complemented by the visual texture of the marble counter top. So the two seem to almost belong with one another as they share a visual texture.

It was shot with 120 Kodak BW film. BW so that the texture would be the focus and not the many colors of the marble or the green walls.  If you think I should reshoot, please comment early, as I will only be able to while I am in Muskoka and will have to plan my week around it.

Claire Harvie,Theme #2, Exotic

In trying to point to something exotic, as something "other", we end up also acknowledging ourselves.

A few glaring issues remain, lines & levels in particular.. this is still feeling rough. Thoughts on what you see?
Thanks guys.

Lauren Leprich - Exotic

Hey everyone! These handmade puppets have been in my house for years, and I can remember looking at them as a child, wondering where they must have come from and who made them. To me, they embody a culture that is intriguing, foreign and exotic. The third image is the one I have chosen as my final submission, however I decided to upload the other two photos I had been considering.
Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated :) Thanks!

Meagan Christou - Exotic

Only post work done in levels and curves .
This is my first 'playful' idea, so this is nice :)
Shot in Trinity Bellwoods Park, I wanted to hint at what it would have been like 100 years ago, with deer running throughout it. Presently the park is infiltrated with large street lamps, making it feel artificial versus organic, so I used a plastic deer that 'lights up' to add to that artificiality.

Savannah Onofrey - Exotic

For the Exotic theme I decided to take a different approach on interpreting it.

When I hear the word "exotic" the first thing that comes to mind are foreign countries and cultures. I decided to photograph three objects that come from exotic countries, but do not posses any sort of exotic characteristic. These three objects have been made by North American companies in foreign/exotic countries where the North American industries have taken over in order to provide for needy consumers. I feel that because of the Westernization of these foreign countries they are losing their culture, and their sense of exoticism.

#1. Black and White

#2. Uncropped

#3. Cropped

I can't decide! Anything would be appreciated! Yay for shitty non-studio lighting! I worked with what I had haha

Michelle Nunes- Theme #2 Exotic

Hello everyone,

So I decided to shoot coconuts for my exotic picture. I feel like the fruit (right?) embodies the feel, and atmosphere of an exotic location.

I put up a choice of 3 because I am not sure which one I should pick!

Help me out? =)

Exotic - Katya Koroscil

For the last week I have been considering the theme and had gotten inspiration from my mother who is a jewellery designer. I chose to play around with exotic jewellery, positive and negative space as we are learning in Alex's class. I feel as though every culture can relate with jewellery, may it be for religious reasons or simply for expressing yourself.
- I had also shot this in 4x5 but considering the timing i shot digital as well.

Theme #1 Michelle Nunes Black Hamburger Round 2

Here is the updated picture of the hamburger. I tried to get rid of the weird beige colour, and included more of the plate. =)

DunnFastFoodEdit2

So I took some of the suggestions and applied them with variations of each other. This is the result of those many drafts.

I usually like the crop of my photos to be squared but after applying a larger crop, as suggested, I decided that maybe this image wasn’t meant to be squared off.  I did decide to keep the blue/green glow under the subject – which I found out was from the glass on the table—as I liked the complimentary contrast of the cool/warm colors.

I lightened the intense shadow on the nugget and hope it makes it more recognizable.

Mithila Majithia -- Theme 1: Fast Food.

Hey everyone,

Apologies for the lateness, I thought I scheduled this to post in the afternoon but I guess that didn't work.

I decided to keep it pretty simple and take a look at the literal link between consumption and consumerism within the concept of 'fast' food. I'm pretty sure we've all chowed down on a burger at some point and know exactly how it feels to just want to eat without paying any regard to the downsides of fast food.

Thanks,
Mithila.

Carrie Cai, Theme #1, Fast Food

no deep conceptual meaning to this. i love fast food, so i wanted to make this fun and inviting. i wouldn't mind if someone got me a big mac for my birthday (it's the thought that counts ;). i have more photos with fries and a drink that i will post maybe at a later time when i'm happy with the post on those, but this one is my favourite. all feedback is mucho appreciated and very welcomed! x

Maria Kolesnikova, Fast Food Theme

So the picture I had in my head was much better than how it actually turned out...but well :)
Basically, the idea is pretty obvious: the ketchup splashes represent a puddle of blood, and the two lines of salt - drugs, which shows how harmful and toxic fast food is! that's it! ;)

Elaine Wong, Theme #1 Fast Food

Fionn Luk, Theme #1, Fast Food

The impact to health from fast food is shocking when it is consumed consistently. Unfortunately, numbers of households are doing exactly that, as fewer and fewer families are eating healthier foods.

Tyler Webb - Fast Food Theme

Hey All!

So I love playing with speed lights and doing high speed photography. The 'fast' food pun in that might be a little too much to handle, but I wanted to stay as far away from the 'fast food kills us' theme as possible and be more playful with it.

I'm not sure which composition I like. I like the vertical emphasis of the second shot, but I think it's too closely cropped compared to the first shot. And the fact that the sprinkle donut isn't totally in focus bugs me.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
