Better late then never. . . I suppose. . .
I tried to make this as minimalist as possible to get at my point. I thought on icon for some time and came to the conclusion that I should probably shoot something I am interested in as well as something we can all relate to. I thought of artists like Andy Warhol who, through his images, brought the idea of icon to the forefront of art and popular culture. When one thinks of celebrity culture, one thinks of Marilyn.
-At least, I do. . .
I wanted to make that next step into his ideology. In my image is a subject that is quite obviously a glass bottle of ketchup. The subject has been stripped of its labels and has been made simply a condiment and container. The purpose is to make the viewer instinctively think of the associated purpose and culture behind the object. One knows that it is a ketchup bottle, even though glass is not its more popular and modern form of containment. It can be assumed that the subject is Heinz, the household name. Finally, the viewer can think of the related foods and locations that the subject can be used.

I understand the point you are making but I feel it has been over done. (The Warhol references).
ReplyDeleteThe ketchup bottle is not truly centred. I like the lighting and the choice not to use the labels. I think if this is exactly when you wanted to photograph then a red on red background could have been interesting. Commenting on how we see an iconic symbol (colour, shape, etc) and blurring those lines.
Really like this, its simple, and elegant.
ReplyDeleteI do see where Meagan is coming from by saying its "over done" but I think each time someone does this its unique in its own way, and i really like how you've captured it.
I think maybe some ketchup on the white table or whatever you used for the base would have been a little more intriguing.

If you wanted to go Warhol with it, it would be neat to see food coloured ketchup in different bottles all shot together. You can point to the iconic red by having it be the only colour that isn't present kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Meagan if you want to stick with one bottle a red seamless could be pretty neat. I'd also maybe have it bottom left corner of a more pulled back shot, just to give the image some dynamism.
