So, this may be a bit of a controversial topic, and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I know a lot of people love going to places like "Zanzibar" for a laugh and a good time, but to me it is something highly upsetting, and something to be ashamed of.
I came across this article online:
I found it interesting that the dancers of the club were enraged about being photographed unexpectedly; several of them were angry because they didn't want to be seen in what they were wearing, and they were worried about their friends and families finding out. Why would they be worried? Perhaps because they were ashamed?
I'm not entirely happy with the composition of this image. (I find it a bit awkward.) Though, it was quite tricky to catch a good photo of this building without being too conspicuous! I tried a few different crops, but I wanted to keep the whole building in - I found it interesting that the name of our school proudly towers directly behind the club; to me, it seemed a very telling juxtaposition.
I also took the saturation down a bit, because when I walk past Zanzibar, I find that it tends to blend with the other buildings beside it. In fact, all the shops along Young St tend to blur together for me after a while. Sometimes I walk by this club and don't even notice. I found the decreased saturation also accentuated the actual grunginess of the building.
Id love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions! Thanks so much.

ReplyDeleteI don't think this images is working, right now it's just an image of the building....it doesn't really carry your concept. And you're right, it is awkward. It's a complex topic and requires just a complex an approach.

So there is no way this is going to happen in time for submission, but I just thought of an idea to bring something to the idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat if you photographed from the roof (or easy way out: doorway area) of the Zanzibar, looking out at the rest of Yonge street. But, proceed to photoshop out ever piece of print or recognizable logo etc out of all the billboards, signs what have you, leaving just shape and colour. Effectively making the city around Zanzibar nude.
