Landon Metcalfe, theme #3, Icon
Machu Picchu. A Global icon. When googled 9,450,000 images are found. We have thousands and thousand of images of Machu Picchu but I guarantee that every visitor of Machu Picchu that has a camera or a cell phone will take pictures of this landmark. I was one of them.
We feel the need to photograph these types of things to prove we were actually there. Its almost seems that, if a photograph wasn't taken then it never happened, or you were never there.
My work is a picture I took of Machu Picchu overlaid by a scan of a postcard I bought from Peru. I wanted to play with the idea that we feel the need to take pictures of these icons even tho we can buy a post card picture that may be better then our own picture for only 50 cents.

I really like the idea, though I feel like I get a little lost looking at the image. It hard to discern one image from the other, having them mashed together. It purs them on a sort of level playing field, though the concept plays with the idea of the postcard picture being better than our own. I just don't get the notion of contrast. I'll see if I can think of something to better communicate the thinking behind it, but again - I do really like the idea and where you're going with it! :)

ReplyDeleteI would push this further. Perhaps get many more postcards and overlay them or layer tons of images from google image search.
