Jacob Burt - Theme - Shame

Hello everyone,
Another late entry, sorry about that. So For the theme shame I decided to tackle weight and size. I chose to photograph the ribs and stomach of a girl. I figured that this area best revealed the whole shame and fight involved with weight and keeping with the beauty desires of our society.
So yeah, I think thats all. Hopefully that all was explained well.
Thank you and hpe you like it :)

  1. I understand your premise as far as the idea of body and weight image being an issue for a lot of woman, but I'm just having a problem seeing how it is portraying "shame."

Its generally a good shot though, I just think if you're going to continue with this idea you should make the shame more obvious in the image (her covering up her body, possibly eating something she would be ashamed of eating because it would make ones body a certain way they'd be ashamed of, etc.).

I'd like to see what else you come up with, but it's a good starting point.

  2. I actually see where your coming from and overall think it is a great image. However, i feel like the colour is a bit off.. may just be my screen but it seems like the top of the ribs seem to be black and white and the stomach a bit peachier. Again might just be my screen but i absolutely love the angle and the lighting.

  3. Call me crazy but I want to see it presented horizontally and vertically flipped. That won't help with the issues of theme Stef and Jes brought up, but I think it would add a 'differentness' to the image, separating it from its simple interpretation of the theme.

Once it's flipped you could have something like ketchup and mustard drizzling down the image (up the persons stomach) which would give the image some movement as well as connect it (although very rudimentally) to something of a theme of shame.

  4. I agree with Katya in the colouring. But I like your take on the theme. Her body looks grotesque and I remember you telling me how you got it that way. I like how you can see goosebumps and the texture of her skin. It makes the image more "real" for me.
