Meagan Christou: Shame
The other side of alcohol. The part that deceptively allures you into a comforting embrace but then rears its ugly head of depression and melancholy. This photo portrays the state after bliss, the conscious lull, the abysmal sadness, the disappointment. A portrait of the indignant.
I tried to step of my comfort zone with this a bit, using a person to create a narrative. Technically I am not overly pleased with the result, I tried to use a softer focus to make the photo more abstract but I personally find it messy. I experimented with cropping in post for about an hour and finally decided on this one, yet still have second thoughts. And lastly, the more I look at the photo, the more cliched I feel it is. On a more positive note, I like the subdued and green hued lighting, I think that part at least adds to the sickly image of the photograph.

I like the way you took it, I would alter only a few things.
ReplyDeleteAll my suggestions can be done in post, the compositions ok but there are some minor things I would alter. I would eliminate the bar code on the bottle to the left, I know, knit picky but it does allure the eye a bit too much for me.
Also I would exaggerate the natural colours you have going, especially on the bottles, there are some blues and a natural green tint to everything. Perhaps adding colors with layers and effects in photoshop?
And the last thing is that I am distracted by the one eye that is visible, perhaps making it look closed? Or blur it more.

ReplyDeleteI think it may need a re-shoot....you're right, it feels messy.

I've been looking at this trying to figure out what could happen to make this image work when I realized what I can't get over in it. There isn't a single object in this photo that doesn't leave the frame. Every object alludes to something else outside of the photo, which works against your intention at this point.
ReplyDeleteWithout suggesting completely different ideas I can't think of a way to really resolve this photo given the problems you've already mentioned in it.
Shoot it 4x5 and hope for some Ghosts? ;)
