I wanted something a little silly. As you can see, the boy in this photo is reading a steamy romance novel. I had better idea later on, but I didn't have the resources handy in time to shoot it. The next idea would be of a girl reading a playboy magazine in the porn section of a local bookstore (bmv...). I find that both ideas are reversed in a sense, which is obvious, but curious nonetheless. It seems it'd be more shameful for a boy to read a harlequin and for a girl to buy playboys. Of course, if one was doing the other, society would accept it as a norm. What do you think...?
I like your idea. I think, for most of us, the idea of buying anything of the sort would offer slight shame, one way or another. Definitely the fear of judgment is apparent. I think the image, as is, offers all that is needed in this concept.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest maybe blurring the foreground a bit more to avoid the distraction of the text and images on the books.
Another Idea would be to shoot multiple scenarios and compile them into a triadic image, or something along those lines.

I think you have done a really good job displaying your idea. I really like the fact he is nervously looking over his shoulder at the person behind him.
ReplyDeleteHowever the image itself is still fairly boring. It looks like a stock image for: men and romance novels, or 'guilt'. To make it more dynamic I would brighten up the colours, or maybe instead of photographing the figure in the bookstore you could take the photo in the private sphere of the character's life, with his romance collection. Hidden or secreted away.
I agree with Nathan. Blurring the books in the front a little would grant more focus to the subject. I really like this idea, because I think it's one that we can all easily relate too. Let's face it, we've all been interested in looking at a book we don't really want to be seen looking at. Hell, I peeked in Snooki's autobiography the other day. Yeah, you read that right.
ReplyDeleteI like how the picture is also taken in a sneaky way, and he is looking away from the camera, as if we see him without him being able to see us. If he was looking the other way, we would obviously be in his line of sight and it wouldn't be as effective.
One thing that could heighten his shame might be if you took the photo from a higher angle, and he was holding the book lower, as if he didn't want people to see what he was reading. Right now he's sort of holding it right out there and doesn't seem so ashamed.

Great idea and concept and very realistic haha. I agree with Helens first and second paragraph ! Good job though! :)

Wow, I really like this! As said, I like how he's looking over his shoulder. We've all, or almost all, have been in his position so it's relatable.
ReplyDeleteGood job!

I'd love to see this crazy photoshopped to resemble the ridiculous amount of post work done on romance book covers, to tie it all together :)
