Meagan Christou - Fantasy

There are spaces in our lives that can transport us into another realm. Often these are magical places to us, no matter their actual location. This room was from my childhood home where I grew up, looking from the kitchen into the dining room. I adored the floor length curtains and often would picture myself in a royal palace.

I choose the black and white because of how abstract it makes the space feel. The fogging and cross hatched texture was NOT done in post, rather this 4x5 negative went through some peculiar changes during development.

  1. I'm happy to see that you uploaded this! I've said it before and I'll say it again. I looooove this photo. :) It's creepy, ethereal, ghostly, romantic, and it just works.

I really like the shadows as well as the hints of light coming out from under the curtain. It looks like theres another world behind it. The viewer is pulled in and behind the curtain. The indoor fog is so odd and unfamiliar, adding to the weird fantastical vibe. I also like the way the reflections subtly pick up the pattern/texture on the floor. Also the cross-hatching is fabulously weird but, it fits just because of photo. If it had happened to another negative, theres a good chance that it would have just looked shitty.

    A happy accident!

  2. This image is lovely.

Your description as well as the image made me feel sad. The feeling of nostalgia really hits strong through this image. I really think that the imperfections couldn't have been better for this image, there isn't a single one that is regrettable. The haze at the top breaks the concentration of the subject manner in the best way possible. The texture though out the image give character to the darker parts of the image.

    Its amazing.

  3. This is amazing Meagan!

I love how you chose a childhood space for the theme of fantasy! The whole atmosphere of the photograph, the very interesting object in the center of the photography makes everything work.

The fog adds to the theme of fantasy too

  4. This is so awesome!

I love it, its spooky yet very fantastical! It makes me think of a scary movie, it could be real or it could not be. You know? !

i love the contrast in it as well. The fog on the top is my attention grabber! it makes me look all around the photo to try and see if its hiding anything, but its not!

Great job i really like this!

  5. you know how much i love this! (and all the other negatives ;) the fogging effect is quite beautiful and i like that it's b&w. the light coming through the window is stunning and adds the bit of light, and i like that most of it is clouded by another set of curtains.

also love that chandelier. makes it romantic.

    LOVE.

  6. the mood of this image is incredible. any more "peculiarities" or "accidents" from this shoot? would love to see more. maybe cropping a bit off the bottom edge would make where the floor meets the wall/bottom of the curtains feel more grounded?

  7. So eerie and mysterious, almost like the entering of another world which really captures the sense of fantasy, for me at least.

  10. Very eerie, I like it. I think the effects that came through in the processing of this photo are very effective. There seems to be a bit of a purple tinge to the photo as well which makes adds to the whole fantasy theme in my opinion. Interesting shot!
